Roger Ballen’s Die Antwoord images feature in Strauss & Co’s online auction.

Roger Ballen’s acclaimed photographs of South African music heavyweights, Die Antwoord, are among the highlights of Strauss & Co’s upcoming South African and International Art, Decorative Arts & Jewellery online-only auction which opened on Monday 30thApril. Among the digital photographs on auction is Spooky Eyes, a 2012 image that further cemented Ballen’s reputation as one of the most influential and important photographers of this century.

Strauss & Co is an acknowledged pioneer of the online auction platform in South Africa, with its inaugural digital sale having taken place in 2013. In taking this step five years ago, Strauss & Co was at the forefront of a worldwide move to complement the traditional auction format with an online element. The recently released Hiscox Online Art Trade Report 2018 revealed that online art market sales reached an estimated $4.22 billion in 2017, up 12% from the year before. The report also found that “almost three quarters (74%) of online art buyers bought more than one art object online in the last 12 months, and are expanding the range and type of artworks and collectibles that they buy”. Strauss & Co’s current South African and International Art, Decorative Arts & Books online-only auction has great scope for these kinds of buyers who are looking to expand their collections.

Since moving into the online auction space in 2013, Strauss & Co Online has built a platform that is easy to use, with buyers able to navigate sales from the comfort of their homes during the week-long period of the sale. The platform contains a wealth of information about bidding online for novice buyers and those new to the online format. In this way, Stauss & Co’s online auctions are playing an important role in the support of new collectors. The auction ends today.
