Our Top Designer Picks From SA Fashion Week

South African Fashion Week (SAFW) wrapped over the weekend. The five-day event kicked off with the Vodka Cruz Fashion Week launch party and ended over the weekend with the last day of the menswear collections. From Sheila Madge and Ekta to Turner Studio and Liz Ogumbo – these were our favourites from the ladieswear collections – read on to see why.

Turner Studio: No jokes, but sometimes you can tell by the intro music what a collection may entail. The ethereal, abstract and playful feel of Turner Studio’s collection was just what we needed on day one. Bright colours and heavy textures along with contemporary tailoring set the collection worlds apart from the rest. It subtly reminded us of Leopard Frock’s SS17 collection at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week – and that’s a good thing because we want contemporary, we want abstract, we crave the alternative. The on-trend colour palette felt heavily inspired by a candyfloss cocktail of delight. We loved it. We want it. When can we get it?

Sheila Madge: This AW18 collection blissfully made us feel like we were in a Wes Anderson film. With subtle hints of 70s inspired trends and bright tropical prints, the collection was fresh with a great take on AW style. Bright sweaters styled with shorts, fishnets and sliders, fused the collection together. The pieces boasted traditional tailoring with detailed accents in beautifully curated colours.

EKTA: Silk and satin saturated this collection with impeccable tailoring and soft, feminine accents. Watercolour prints – true to Ekta’s aesthetic,  and metallic characteristics gave the collection a New York City girl feel. This collection is just perfect for the season. The colour layout directed us from soft pinks and sea greens to turmeric hued stockings along with detailed jacket linings and elegantly draped skirts.

Thebe Magugu: A favourite from SAFW AW18. Magugu‘s collection was edgy and sophisticated with excellent garment construction, whilst keeping the female body in mind. The first piece to come down the runway was a strong interpretation of Magugu‘s style as designer. The extra-large printed handbag was a show-stopper and you need one to make your timeless-trend collection complete!

Liz Ogumbo: Denim heaven. We absolutely adore Ogumbo’s AW18 collection. Sequins and high waists with furry details – like what else could you ask for in a ready-to-wear collection?  The easy-going feel of the predominantly denim collection was a great rendition for the perfect Autumn ensemble.

AGEO by Arnold Phasha: A magical all-black collection with impeccable contemporary tailoring and an eye for detail. The collection was rich in mesh and leather elements from skirts and dresses to wide sleeved blouses and elegant slacks. The monochrome pieces were styled with über cool kicks, solidifying the collection as ultra-cool.
