We’re so lucky that AFI (African Fashion International) decided to swap seasons this year, meaning we got two shows in Joburg this year. We had the Autumn/Winter (AW) collections in March earlier this year and the Spring/Summer (SS) collections kicking off today at Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton. With shows by some of Africa’s best, you can expect to see top designers with their contemporary and feminine aesthetics taking over the runway. I will be covering every show, everyday from today until Saturday, so be sure to follow me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter – I will also be making my SnapChat debut – go find me there!
To get things started, nothing is better than knowing what to prep for at AFI’s Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week. It’s a busy couple of days and although it has a glamorous ring to it, believe me, its much more than that. Analyzing the garments as they hit the runway can leave you feeling overwhelmed – I mean, it’s colours and textures, lights, cameras, journalists, models, VIPs… the list goes on.
My best advice and must have’s for Fashion Week starts right here.
Statement Jacket: A great choice for your first day. Wanna enter the tent with a bang? Then consider the statement jacket, as it will most probably get you the fashion cred you need. You can even opt for a great fur vest, or embroidered denim jacket. Don’t forget, oversized coats are huge this season. Be adventurous.
Sneakers: Your best friend pretty much right after the first day! Many fashionistas at Fashion Week don’t even bother will heels and pull off some amazing street style looks. Take inspiration from them – your feet will get tired.
Your Smartphone and Portable Charger: Of course you’ll be sharing all the action right from your seat, so this is a given if you’re active on social media. For safety, pack your portable charger too. With all the live tweeting, live streaming and snapping, your phone will without a doubt run out of battery power.
Make Up Touch Up Kit: If you’re spending half your day at Fashion Week, you will most definitely need a lil’ touch up along the way. Bring the basics; a compact with a mirror and lipstick/gloss.
Camera: It’s always advisable to snap your own images at Fashion Week, but you can usually get your hands on great images directly from AFI’s website – just remember to credit them. With your own images you can play around and re-image them for your publication or blog, making them unique!
Bottled Water: Coffee will only get you that far. Water is your best friend and obvs you don’t have to cart a bottle around, order a bottle with fresh lemon wedges when you get a chance between shows. The Square is replete with cafe’s and restaurants for you to take a quick break from the crowd.
